Greta can bowl rivals over

Published on 30/04/2010 09:45

BOLLIN GRETA was progressive during a relatively light, five-race campaign in 2009, signing off in July with a ready victory in a C&D handicap. It’s a slight concern that she has been absent since, but she looks the type to do even better this season and a 7lb rise for that victory doesn’t look harsh, so she may well make a winning reappearance. The unexposed Abayaan landed a 1m 3f maiden at Southwell on her debut in December and wasn’t disgraced when…

Law has rivals’ range

Published on 30/04/2010 09:44

An intriguing fillies’ maiden, featuring a handful that have already shown a fair amount of ability and some likely-looking newcomers. It’s not east to choose from the number of appealing options, but following much deliberation the vote goes to LAW OF THE RANGE, who wasn’t strongly fancied ahead of her debut (opened at 28-1) at Yarmouth recently, but shaped with immense promise, finishing well to be beaten less than a length into third behind I’m A…

Watch Amigo go!

Published on 30/04/2010 09:43

Although a case can be made for many in this handicap, by far the most interesting candidate is the unexposed WATCH AMIGO, whose yard has started to fire recently. The four-year-old, winner of a Wolverhampton maiden on his second start at the back-end of last year, made a highly promising reappearance on his handicap and turf debut when a staying-on fourth of 12 to Cornus over 6f at Pontefract earlier this month. He was doing all his best work in the closing stages, leaving…

Buffalo to Stamp on his rivals

Published on 29/04/2010 22:09

The finale is a nice handicap hurdle as opposed to a bumper or anything nasty and Venetia Williams can take the pot with BUFFALO STAMPEDE. Although my support was misplaced when the horse ran here in February, he did travel nicely for a long way before dropping right out (dismounted after line). Again ran well for a long way at Newbury the following month although again, he weakened quite badly late on, despite a 5f reduction in trip. Right back to form at Bangor on better…

Here We Are to gain first win

Published on 29/04/2010 20:53

HEREWEAREAGAIN is given a tentative vote to defy topweight. Only a novice, it is fair to say the horse has enough to prove after a pretty poor effort at Cheltenham a fortnight ago. Blinkers going on is not really a positive sign either but against the negatives, the horse is totally unexposed and not only is Philip Hobbs in cracking form, he is 5-15 here with his chasers. Royal Kicks bounced back to form this spring with a win on heavy ground at Newton Abbot and followed up…

Marshal to take Command

Published on 29/04/2010 16:49

COMMAND MARSHAL could be the best option in a race where nothing makes any stand-out appeal. In mid-October, the 7-y-o won a 20f handicap here by no less than 15-lengths and that formline has to be considered relevant to solving today’s challenge. Has been kept busy since and is 13 lb higher today but that is not unfair and I am hopeful that the return to a bit further than 20f will help him find a few pounds. Tends to be held up and I see him creeping into things late and …

Shakalakaboomboom's chance more credible than name

Published on 29/04/2010 16:45

SHAKALAKABOOMBOOM has twice been second in 4-races so far and has given the impression that he doesn’t want too much of a stamina test. Better ground should help in that respect and he must have every chance of breaking his duck for the powerful yard on Nicky Henderson. Calon Crwbin looks progressive and is a definite contender judged on his recent placed efforts. Doesn’t look the quickest in a finish so this might be sharp enough and I would suspect he will be…

Art worth bidding on

Published on 29/04/2010 16:42

Guineas Eve but there is work to do and Fontwell stage an evening card with an Abba concert to follow, always a good night out if the weather stays fine. The opening race is a handicap chase and BID ART looks the one to be on. There is the issue that he is down to run at Huntingdon on Thursday and if he keeps that engagement, then his appeal would be lessened here, even if he did turn out again. That aside, the 5-y-o had been knocking at the door prior to his run here last…

No time for Idle Chit Chat, Rawaaj is coming

Published on 29/04/2010 09:21

Chit Chat was not fancied to run well at all last time out as odds of 40/1 would testify. however, a fourth postilion was gained, and today it looks like the layers are over reacting to that run by laying him as short as 4/1. It must be the Trainer, Jockey factor. I prefer Rawaaj from Donald McCain with Jason maguire on board. Progressing with each run, albeit slowly, This is a similar event to the last he contested when getting close up on third under his claimer that day,.…

Blue Spartan to hold off the Red Nosed one

Published on 29/04/2010 09:15

Roodolp has had only one appearance over hurdles in his career, but that came over 500 days ago, which was also the last time we saw him on the race track Looking at what he will have to do today compared with what he achieved on that last run he looks like he has a definite chance if he is fit. Blue Spartan has been close on a couple of occasions now and will sure enough find a race of his own sooner rather than later, and he has every chance again today. Pricewise, he may be …

Value lies in the Artic

Published on 29/04/2010 09:08

Prince Des Marias arrives here looking for a treble after wins at both Towcester and Chepstow. He seems to be improving and conditions are just fine for him. Line Artic takes a drop in class for this today. held by Woolocombe Folly last time out, prior to that he scored over this trip at Kempton. His chance looks equal to that of the prince above, but he is a better price./ is that not value? Almaydan has finished third in his last four consecutive races. Not only is his…

Denny Mac should get off the mark

Published on 28/04/2010 21:57

Jonjo O Neil and AP McCoy team up once again for this one with Badger Foot. Despite this gelding remaining a maiden the jockey trainer factor is already leaving the layers taking no chances. Having not appeared on a surface quicker than good to soft, we don't know how he will handle the good ground expected today and with little form in the book will not be difficult to oppose. Minella For Food will not be the obvious answer after just two outings over fences to date,…

Mayor of Kilcock too much for The Honourable Lady

Published on 28/04/2010 21:50

The Flints have a great record on this track and they team up again today to try to get another on the list with Thehonourablelady. She last won in October gone, but has been pretty consistent since. She is one of a few with chances today. Victory Surge will need to get back to the form that saw him win on his penultimate outing at Warwick. The nine pound penalty he picked up for that win may not have helped last time although the run wasn't all bad. He has been dropped…

Golden ticket could be Square

Published on 28/04/2010 21:41

Jim Best has had very few runners here over the years, but has a 43% record with them. this has come from 4 winners, from just seven runners in the last five years, so his Skye But N Ben should be looked at closely. The gelding has not won a race in his last 24 outings which doesnt fill you with confidence, but his hurdle runs have been improving each time and he looks likely to go at least close today. This is a pretty poor event all told and there is very little winning for…

Weigh in with Waahej

Published on 28/04/2010 10:21

Mr Freddy was consistent during 2009 and should give it a good shot if tuned-up for his reappearance, but the race-fit duo Zaplamation and WAAHEJ both arrive here in good form and can fight out the finish. The latter earns the confident vote, unpenalised for his runaway victory in a C&D apprentices' heat recently. A similar display will see him follow up today.

Hurry - Beat The Rush!

Published on 28/04/2010 10:17

BEAT THE RUSH made a good start to the season when runner-up to Corsica at Beverley and while he's been raised 4lb for that effort, he showed a good attitude, keeping on well in the closing stages, and can go one better here, perhaps at the chief expense of Molon Labe. The last-named improved with each of his three starts as a juvenile, chasing home Burj Nahar at Nottingham in November on his final start of 2009, and should have more to offer this season. Pena Dorada left…

Take Sunrise to shine

Published on 28/04/2010 10:09

Although there are others that come into this race with seemingly more persuasive credentials, it could be worth backing ANTIGUA SUNRISE at around the 7-1 mark. The Noverre filly, representing the bang in-form Richard Fahey yard, was well held in the race won by Aphrodisia at Doncaster, but the latter had race fitness on her side on that occasion. Antigua Sunrise will strip fitter for that run and she flourished last spring, so this may be the time of year to catch her. Bollin …

French Art looks picture perfect at Pontefract

Published on 28/04/2010 10:02

Hits Only Jude was a bit slow off the blocks when third to Tangerine Trees over 6f here last time and ought to give it a good shot back up in trip today, but stall 11 is hardly helpful, whereas FRENCH ART has landed the plum draw in trap one and can bag this handicap. The five-year-old has often appeared to keep a bit back for himself, not always delivering the killer blow he promises, but he shaped well on his reappearance at Thirsk recently when fourth to Fujin Dancer and…

Lion can roar at Pontefract

Published on 28/04/2010 09:55

Godolphin’s horses have tended to need a run or two to reach concert pitch during the past couple of seasons, but, still, LION MOUNTAIN should prove a tough nut to crack in this maiden. He was nicely clear of the rest when a short-head second to Bullet Train on debut at Yarmouth in October and looks the type to make up into a decent three-year-old this season. Sir Michael Stoute boasts a 36 per cent strike-rate with runners at this track in recent seasons and while his…

Back Bahceli!

Published on 28/04/2010 09:55

Some likely-looking newcomers line up for this juvenile maiden and while the market should be informative, few make more appeal on paper than BAHCELI, whose yard have made a typically bright start to the turf season with its two-year-olds and this £48,000 purchase by Mujadil is a half-brother to three winning juveniles, Damien, Miss Law and Miss Well. Mark Johnston, who has sent out the winner of this race twice in recent years, also unleashes an interesting debutant in…
